History: A festive Fourth of July

It looks like Waterville folks spent a festive Fourth of July in 1921, as reported in the Waterville Empire-Press on July 7, 1921.

Many Celebrate at Soap Lake and Chelan

Waterville was rather a deserted place July 4, many of our citizens journeying to Soap Lake and Chelan to attend the celebrations at those points. A number of picnic parties at different places on the mountain were also enjoyed by local people.

The band and baseball team were at Soap Lake. From a letter to this office from the Soap Lake Commercial Club, we judge the band made a hit with the people there. They have requested us to extend a vote of thanks to the band for the splendid music, and express their appreciation to the people who celebrated with them.

Wearing white uniforms and white hats with bands bearing the words “Waterville Band,” the local musical organization presented a fine appearance as well as doing some good advertising for our city.

The Waterville ball team won in the game with Soap Lake, by a score of 10 to 6.

Drew’s orchestra from here was also at Soap Lake and played for the dances.

Big Crowd at Chelan

Chelan has always been a popular place to celebrate on account of the lake, and many from here went Sunday and camped overnight. It was estimated that 700  people slept in the Chelan park Sunday night. Wenatchee and Waterville were both well represented at this celebration.

The races each afternoon were largely attended and much enjoyed. Four of Waterville’s harness horses were there and raced on Saturday and Monday afternoons. They were Vance Patch and Bell D., owned by Grant Deattley and son; Baby Rose, by Robert Fitzsimmons; and Lucy New, by W. H. Fraser. On Saturday Vance Patch won the race, getting the first and third heats, Lucy New taking the second heat. On Monday, Baby Rose was an easy winner, taking all three heats.

Those Who Stayed at Home

Of course, there were a large number of our people who enjoyed a quiet day at home. The editor was out of town, but we have been told that all restrictions on citizens were removed by the acting mayor, who declared the city wide open for the day.
