Woodmen to stage big race meet
What promises to be one of the biggest racing events ever held in North Central Washington will be staged in this city September 22, 23 and 24.
After the decision was reached that there would be no county fair this fall, the Modern Woodmen of America lodge of Waterville decided to take up the matter with their members about holding a race meet and harvest carnival. At the lodge meeting last Friday evening, a unanimous vote was given in favor of holding the big event. Members of the lodge had sounded out the sentiment of the business men and found that they favored it very much and were anxious and willing to help in a financial way. The lodge has pledged $500.00 in support of the affair.
A general committee composed of Charles Osborne, chairman; W.H. Fraser, L.F. Helbig, W.C. Herrington, George Harsh and Henry Greer, was named. Other committees will be appointed later.
The committee already has assurances of $1000.00 to finance the undertaking. This, with the gate receipts, will put them by easily, and enable them to give purses larger than have ever before been offered on the Waterville race track, which is one of the best in the state. These purses and the splendid track should bring many good horses here.
An enthusiastic bunch of boosters are starting the work and it is the duty of every citizen of our city to get squarely behind them to make the occasion a big success.
Get the dates in mind; tell your friends, and boost to beat the band.
