Sex offender arrested after attack

A registered metformin side effects appetite sex offender was arrested Sunday afternoon after a brutal attack on a woman at her Bridgeport home last month.

The 36-year-old man was arrested at a residence on Navarre Coulee Road by Douglas County sheriff’s deputies.

Douglas County Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal said the man is suspected of breaking into the woman’s home on June 3. The woman and man were acquaintances, but Gjesdal did not know how well they knew each other.

He said the 58-year-old woman told investigators that she woke up around 1 a.m. to find the man standing next to her bed. She said the man forcibly raped her repeatedly over several hours and stopped occasionally to take drugs, Gjesdal said.

The sheriff said the woman fought back against the suspect and tried to get away. She did not have a phone.

“She did not feel she could get away at any time during the attack,” he said.

A family member of the woman came to pick her up at 9:30 a.m. and the suspect let her leave, Gjesdal said. The man was not there when she returned home, he said.

The woman did not report the incident to police right away, but did so on June 4 at the urging of a family member. She was then treated for injuries “consistent with the attack she described,” Gjesdal said.

Officers knew the man lived on Navarre Coulee Road, but he also is sometimes transient, Gjesdal said. On Sunday, a Chelan County sheriff’s deputy saw the man at his residence and called the Douglas County detective, who went to the home to arrest the man.

According to court records, the man was previously arrested in 1996 for raping a woman he did not know as she walked to her Cashmere home.

The woman was struck in the head, dragged behind a home and raped. She was also struck several times with a wooden board. The man pleaded guilty to first-degree rape in that incident and was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison.
