A class called “Taking the Fear out of Entering at the County Fair” will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Master Gardener’s Community Education Garden in Wenatchee.
Participants will be taught how to enter vegetables, flowers, canning and more for the North Central Washington District and Chelan County fairs.
Also, the NCW District Fair has announced that changes are coming to its baking department.
The alterations will add options to allow more people to exhibit in this year’s fair, which will be held Aug. 25 to 28 in Waterville. The additions will include recipes such as pies, cakes and cookies that were all made from scratch.
Premium book entries have also changed. There will be the usual yeast bread and quick breads, but participants can also enter flat bread, such as pita and tortillas. Those that have health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or Celiac’s disease can enter their special formulas for their special needs foods.
Additionally, there will be a class for ‘mistake cakes’ for both adults and juniors. A special heritage entry will be a decorated cake, cookie or cupcake that best depicts the Centennial Fair theme.
The entry should also include a short story about the exhibit and may not exceed 8 inches.
All entries must have a copy of the recipe when entered on Wednesday, Aug. 24. For more information, call 745-8480.
Highway 28 crash injures five
Two cars collided about 6:55 p.m. Aug. 5 on Highway 28 near 35th Street in East Wenatchee, sending one driver and four passengers to the hospital.
The Washington State Patrol said Anthony J. Reinecker, 17, was turning south on the highway from 35th Street N.W. when his 2008 Honda CRV struck a southbound 2005 Nissan Altima. The crash left Reinecker unhurt but injured his 13-year-old passenger as well as the Altima’s driver, Bryan L. Janes, 51.
Three passengers in Janes’ car, ages 59, 76 and 86, were also injured. All were taken to Central Washington Hospital for treatment. Troopers said Reinecker would be cited for failure to yield to oncoming traffic.
Bookkeeper arrested in business theft
Douglas County sheriff’s detectives on Aug. 2 arrested a 53-year-old Wenatchee man who is suspected of taking more than $165,000 since 2004 from an East Wenatchee design business where he was the bookkeeper.
On June 15, the owner of Blind Renaissance Design called deputies after attempting to make a credit card purchase and discovering the credit limit was at its maximum, Undersheriff Don Culp reported.
A detective assigned to the case found thefts from the company dating back to 2004 that included writing checks to nonexistent vendors, falsifying payments to vendors and changing records.
Amounts taken ranged from $6,500 this year to more than $30,000 in 2007, a sheriff’s office news release stated. The man, who was the company’s bookkeeper with general accounting and check-writing duties, was booked into the Chelan Douglas Regional Justice Center on suspicion of first-degree theft.
No suspect identified in pharmacy robbery
East Wenatchee Police are still hoping to identify a man who robbed the Eastmont Pharmacy at gunpoint July 29.
Assistant Police Chief Dan Reierson said the man walked into the store at 630 Valley Mall Parkway around 2 p.m., walked behind the pharmacy counter and pointed a handgun at the employee working there, demanding methadone and Dialudid.
The pharmacist gathered several bottles of the drugs and gave them to the man, who put them in a bag, went out the back door and walked away toward Valley Mall Parkway, Reierson said.
Stabbing sends one to hospital
A 20-year-old Brewster man was taken to the Okanogan Douglas Hospital on July 30 after he was stabbed in the abdomen at an orchard camp near Bridgeport.
Polino Gudino Sanchez was breathing but unresponsive when he was taken to the Brewster hospital by ambulance just after 1 a.m., said Okanogan County Undersheriff Joe Somday.
A hospital spokeswoman said that he was treated and later released.
Somday said police were called to the camp off Jack Wells Road. Okanogan and Douglas county deputies and Brewster police responded, and talked to witnesses, but none knew what happened.
A kitchen knife stained with blood was found at the camp, along with a bloody handprint on a light switch, he said.
A 19-year-old man who is considered the suspect fled the scene, he said.
Prowls may be related to earlier arrest
A rash of vehicle prowls reported Aug. 3 may be connected to a prowling suspect nabbed in a stolen car two nights earlier.
Dispatchers received eight calls reporting vehicle prowls of nine vehicles and one stolen pickup truck, all in the Orondo area. But Douglas County Undersheriff Don Culp said the prowls may have been committed earlier in the week and reported later. Items taken include knives, a GPS unit, keys, tools and clothing. A 1987 Ford Ranger pickup was also reported missing from an Orondo orchard.
Culp said detectives are still investigating an incident north of Orondo Aug. 1 when deputies chased down a suspect in a stolen 2003 Volkswagen Jetta that was filled with what they believe to be stolen items. The driver of that vehicle fled the car and escaped on foot. Deputies arrested a passenger in the vehicle.
The 36-year-old Chelan resident was booked into Chelan County Regional Justice Center for possession of stolen property, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and vehicle prowl.
