I’ve had the chance to interview several people who were passing through Waterville on trans-national walking trips, some of whom have stayed at the Waterville Hotel. Here is a story from the Aug. 18, 1921, edition of the Waterville Empire-Press about two young women who were making the trip in 1921.

Girls on a Hike from Frisco to Chicago
Hazel Curtis and Frances Jaquoys, two young ladies who gave Rockford, Illinois, as their home, were guests at Hotel Waterville Tuesday night. The young ladies have been visiting in California and decided to make a trip from San Francisco to Chicago, walking, and being invited to ride. The idea was that they would not spend any money for transportation. They said a great many people had asked them to hold down the back seat of their cars, and they always accept. They were just a week getting from Frisco here, and twenty miles was the longest distance they had walked at one time.
