Searchers find kayaker’s body

Christopher Egan-Pennels, 24, of Riverside, Calif., was in about 12 feet of water near the 11000 block of Highway 2, Chelan County Sheriff Brian Burnett said in a news release.
Egan-Pennels was last seen about 4:15 p.m. Aug. 14 when his kayak tipped, dumping him into the river, Burnett said. Egan-Pennels, who was not wearing a life jacket, was an employee of Tube Leavenworth. At the time of the accident he was paddling upstream to contact tubers and direct them to shore.
Egan-Pennels was in a kayak in which the rider sits partly on top of the boat, said Lt. Maria Agnew.
The area where he fell into the water was running fairly swiftly but was not true whitewater, she said. She estimated that his body was found about a mile downriver from where he fell in.
Dave Johnson, Tube Leavenworth owner, said that he did not know why Egan-Pennels was not wearing a life jacket. “That equipment was right there where he left his cellphone,” he said.
Johnson said Egan-Pennels had worked for the company for about three weeks.
