Area churches serving the needy

The associated churches in the Wenatchee Valley recently held the 10th annual Back to School Giveaway to help 900 children in the valley.

Bob Shepard, director of Serve Wenatchee Valley, said the combined efforts of churches throughout the valley again saw the need and responded in a big way. Volunteers got together on the grounds of First Presbyterian Church in Wenatchee and distributed $25,000 worth of clothing, shoes and back-to-school needs.

Volunteers gave away new shoes and new or gently used school clothing. The Academy of Hair Design gave free haircuts to 300 children.
Serve Wenatchee Valley is a year-round church cooperative which helps families in need.

The cooperative will hold a winter giveaway of coats, hats and gloves from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 22 at 517 S. Wenatchee Ave. in Wenatchee.

On Nov. 22, Serve Wenatchee Valley will give away 400 Thanksgiving baskets. Sign-up for the baskets will be at the Serve Wenatchee Valley office at 212 S. Mission St. in Wenatchee beginning Nov. 7.

The valley churches celebrated 10 years of giveaway in a prayer service last month at Eastmont Baptist Church in East Wenatchee.
