The Waterville High School football team may have found its new primary playmaker.

In Friday’s 28-14 win over Entiat at Kellen Biggar Memorial Field, freshman Mathew Deshazer ran for 99 yards and scored two touchdowns, including a 92-yard kickoff return.

For a rebuilding Shockers team that is going to rely on youth for the next couple of seasons, Deshazer’s emergence against the Tigers was a welcome sight.

“He’s our fastest kid,” said assistant coach Chris Hill. “He’s about 5-foot-9, 145 pounds, so he’s not big, but once he gets going, he can move a bit. On the kick return, he got to the corner and nobody could catch him.”

The Shockers won’t take the field again until Sept. 30, when they travel to play Warden.

Waterville 28, Entiat 14

Touchdown kickoff returns, 75-yard pass completions and breakaway runs marked the Shockers’ season opener. (Last week’s contest against Pateros was postponed until Nov. 4.)

“It’s great,” Hill said. “The team didn’t win last year. We have a lot of young kids getting a lot of playing time, and they stepped up tonight.”

On their first possession, the Shockers scored when quarterback Mitchell Clements scampered 10 yards for a touchdown. This came after a long touchdown pass completion to Jamie Abrahamse was called back for a penalty. The touchdown play was set up by Deshazer’s 25-yard run.
Tigers running back Emiliano Villafuerte ran the kickoff all the way for a touchdown to answer back. Both after-point opportunities failed.
Deshazer took the ensuing kickoff and ran all the way for a touchdown. Clements ran for the two-point conversion.

In the second quarter, Entiat receiver Gilberto Murillo took a 73-yard pass from quarterback Jeremy Davis to tie the score with the two-point conversion on a running play.

Late in the quarter, Waterville scored again when Abrahamse took a 75-yard pass from Clements. Marco Caballero ran for the conversion, and the Shockers led 22-14 at the half.

Both teams took a break from the break-away style and exchanged punts for the entire third quarter.

The fourth quarter featured a lot of a hard-fought defense, but Waterville prevailed on a long possession that consumed most of the quarter. The Shockers added icing to the sweet victory when Deshazer scored a touchdown in the last seconds of the game.

“In the second half, we controlled the ball, and our running backs ran hard,” Hill said. “Our line play was the difference on both sides of the ball.”
