It was a bright spring afternoon at the Bridgeport Invitational May 8 and the Shockers — both boys and girls — responded well to the good weather. Highlights for both the boys and girls teams were good performances in the relays. The boys 4×100 team of Dayn Madsen, Rafael Capi, Brandon Dorn and Chris Dronen finished third. In the girls 4×200, Brooke Simmons, Elaina Thomsen, Cristina Suarez and Kelsey Browning blistered the opposition and won the event with a time four seconds better than any previous performance by Waterville. Participating teams in the meet were primarily 2B schools, giving the Shockers a sense of the competition for the postseason meets.

Browning was also dominant in the middle distances, winning the 400, 800 and 1600 meter runs. The 800 was close with Karina Rincon of Brewster coming in second. Browning bested Desiree Parks of Entiat in the 400. Her cousin Taylor Willms of Waterville was second in the 1600. Willms ran away from the field in the 3200 to win the event handily. Elaina Thomsen won the high jump, took sixth in the long jump and ran a leg of the winning relay. Like Willms, Brooke Simmons is a freshman but ran strongly in the 300 hurdles for a third place, took fifth in the 100 meter run and ran leadoff in the relay. Lexi Deishl, another freshman, was eighth in the javelin.

For the boys, the third place relay was the good news. The boys team finished 11th overall. Cristian Morales finished sixth in the 3200 and Brandon Dorn took sixth in the long jump. Mansfield’s duo of Collin Pate and Logan Cooper also received points in the meet with Pate taking fourth in the long jump and Cooper taking thirds in both the long jump and the triple jump.

This was the final meet of the regular season for the Shockers. They will travel to Kittitas May 15 for the sub-district meet. The district meet, where participants qualify for the state meet, will be held May 22 in Ephrata. The state track meet will be May 29-30 at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
