Area 1B and 2B track teams gathered for the annual District 6 meet May 22 at Ephrata. Waterville and Mansfield athletes did well, winning six events and qualifying six athletes for the 2B state meet May 29-30 at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. Collin Pate will be representing Mansfield and Kelsey Browning, Elaina Thomsen, Taylor Willms, Lexi Deishl and Cristina Suarez will compete for Waterville.

Browning was the big winner with victories in the 400, 800 and 1600 meter runs. She was also on the 4×200 meter relay team that qualified. Browning holds the record for the 1600 meter run at the district meet, which she set two years ago. Thomsen won the high jump, finished fourth in the 300 meter hurdles and ran on the 4×200 relay. Suarez and Deishl complete the relay team, which finished fourth and will run at the state meet. Willms was a runaway victor in the 3200 meter run. She finished third in the 1600 meters and fifth in the 800. Deishl finished seventh in the 3200 and Suarez finished seventh in the 100 meters and eighth in the 200. The 4×100 meter relay team of Deishl, Willms, Suarez and Thomsen finished seventh.

Pate took first place in the 1B long jump event. He also finished fourth in the 100 meter dash. His Mansfield teammate Logan Cooper took seventh in the triple jump and eighth in the javelin. For the Waterville boys, Cristian Morales finished eighth in both the 2B 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Alex Capi finished eighth in the 2B discus throw.

A bright spot for the Shockers is that Willms, Deishl and Capi are all freshmen. Browning and Thomsen are juniors even though both have been blue ribbon winners in previous state competition. Suarez, an exchange student, will be returning to Spain and Morales, Pate and Cooper are all seniors.
