The Waterville/Mansfield football team concluded its season on the road on a winning note defeating Bridgeport, 59-26.

It was the second match-up for the two teams this season.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead, but the Shockers came back with a vengeance, opening up a 40-13 lead before halftime en route to the 33-point victory.

Bridgeport coach Eric Schmidt was impressed with the way his team improved over the course of the campaign, as a Mustangs team that had almost no football experience at the beginning of the season took massive strides forward by the end of the year.

In fact, against the Shockers on Friday, the Mustangs opened up a double-digit advantage for the first time all season, leading 13-0 behind Hugo Santana’s two early touchdowns. Santana began the game with a kick return touchdown, then took a sweep 75 yards for another score in the first quarter.

From there, however, Waterville took control of the game. The Shockers scored 22 points in the first quarter and 18 in the second. On the night, Waterville quarterback Tanner Marden threw for 267 yards and five touchdowns on just 11 attempts, and the Shockers added 263 yards on the ground for a well-balanced offensive showing. Waterville ended its season at 2-7 overall, while Bridgeport finished 0-10.

Highlights: Waterville — Marden (6-11-267, 5TD passing; 7-56, TD rushing), Angel Lucero (12-143, TD rushing). Bridgeport — Santana (16-143, TD rushing), Gilberto Padilla (14-103, 2TD rushing).
