$1.5 million in grants announced to help children, veterans

NCW — Gov. Jay Inslee announced last month an award of almost $1.5 million in grants to go to programs that helps to provide children opportunity to explore the outdoors.

No Child Left Inside grants will be awarded to the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission and targets at-risk youth by funding programs which provide outdoor education and recreation such as exploring Mount St. Helens, white water rafting, and sailing.

Nearly one-third of the projects receiving funding employ veterans, and the legislature approved an additional $500,000 for the next two years.

Grants are administered by the state Recreation and Conservation board and are funded by the state General Fund.

Local counties awarded grants include Chelan county, $61,569; Mason County, $86,090; and Okanogan County, $22,650
