Douglas County commissioners on July 9 appointed Undersheriff Kevin Morris as county sheriff, to serve the remainder of retired sheriff Harvey Gjesdal’s term which ends Dec. 31.

Gjesdal announced in May his intentions to retire from the position on June 30. He had announced in November of last year that he would not run for re-election.

The county commissioners had named Morris interim sheriff as of July 1, while they awaited making an appointment to serve out Gjesdal’s term. Since Gjesdal ran for the office as a Republican, the Douglas County Republican Central Committee accepted applications for the position.

According to County Administrator James Barker, the only application the committee received came from Morris.

Morris was sworn into the position after his appointment by the commissioners.

Morris and East Wenatchee police officer Leeon Leyde are running for the office in this year’s general election.
