The Waterville/Mansfield Shocker girls finished in fourth place for the regular season in the Central Washington 2B conference and qualified for district 5/6 postseason play in the Tri-Cities and Chelan.

Their first game, played Feb. 8 at Liberty Christian School, was against the Walla Walla Valley Academy Knights. The Shockers came out on top, 58-45.

The first quarter for the Waterville/Mansfield girls was their best quarter of the season with 21 points scored. The Knights had two players over 6-feet tall which helped them with offensive and defensive rebounding. But the Shockers passing game was spot on and they made shots inside and outside. Their ball handling teamwork was also their best of the season.

The Shockers made five 3-point shots and 9 of 14 free throw attempts. The Knights made just two 3-point shots and made 7 of 13 free throw attempts.

With the Knights’ loss, they were eliminated from the tournament.

Scoring highlights were Alex Poppie, 13 points; Elizabeth Katovich, 12 points, Ella Osborne, 12 points; McKenna Gurnard, 9 points; Sarah Mullen, 8 points; Codee Reid, 2 points; and Meredith Mittelstaedt, 2 points.

The two high scorers for Walla Walla Valley Academy were Gabi Browning with 21 points and Sahara Browning with 12 points.

The second tournament game for the Shockers, on Feb. 9 at Hanford High School, did not go as well as the first game. They faced the Tri-Cities Prep Jaguars and lost 63-34. The Shockers had only one 3-point shot and made 9 of 14 free throw attempts.

Scoring highlights were Ella Osborne, 18 points; Meredith Mittelstaedt, 5 points; Elizabeth Katovich, 5 points; Sarah Mullen, 4 points; and Bailey Viebrock, 2 points.

Editor’s Note: Waterville/Mansfield advanced in district play and faced DeSales on Feb. 15 at Chelan High School. The Shockers won, 32-25, with DeSales eliminated. On Feb. 16, the Shockers played Mabton and lost a close contest, 44-42. Details of these games will appear in next week’s Empire Press. The top five teams — Tri-Cities Prep, Brewster, Liberty Bell, Lake Roosevelt and Mabton — all advance to the regionals/state tournament Feb. 22-March 2 in Spokane.
