Jameson Lake Resort held its opening day fishing derby April 27.

It was a cold and challenging day for fishing, with white caps on the lake, but that didn’t stop the group of hardy anglers from casting their lines, determined to catch that winning fish.

The derby was a great success with a large group competing to catch the biggest fish and win the $250 first prize.

Weights ranged from a little over a pound to the winning catch that weighed in at 7-pounds, 5-ounces, plus several tagged fish that were caught during the event. Fish that sported the blue tags were worth a $50 gift certificate to the Sportsman’s Warehouse in East Wenatchee.

Jameson Lake co-owner Julie Day said, “The Department of Fish & Wildlife planted 211 3 to 5-pound. fish, and 4,000 of a mix of 14 to 16 inch Kokanee and Rainbows.”

The $250 first prize in the derby went to Devon Grennan of Seattle. He won $250 for his 7-pound, 5-ounce Rainbow trout.

Grennan’s family has fished at Jameson Lake for about 40 years.

“I have fished here for about 35 years myself, it’s a great fishing hole,” he said.

Second place was Keith Grennan who received $100 for his 1-pound, 14-ounce catch.

Third prize went to Dennis Grennan with his 1-pound, 13-ounce fish. He received a $50 dinner gift certificate from Jameson Lake Resort.

Angus Duke IV caught a blue tagged fish weighing 1-pound, 6-ounces.

“It was my first time fishing at Jameson Lake,” he said. “It was windy, but it was also amazing.”

Opening day was a hub of activity with lot of people fishing, camping and at the resort for a meal.

“Opening day continues to get better every year, as does our restaurant business. We are happy to see new customers. We appreciate the great support from the community and our friends from the surrounding areas,” Day said.

The resort’s restaurant is open Friday from 11 a.m to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m to 7 p.m.

Jameson Lake fishing season this year runs through Oct. 31.
