BUI patrols set for July Fourth weekend

NCW — Authorities are conducting emphasis patrols July 5-7 to limit boating under the influence.

Dubbed Operation Dry Water, law enforcement agencies around the state will increase their presence on the water as boaters celebrate the July Fourth holiday, the state Parks and Recreation Commission said in a news release.

“Every year we see boating accidents and tragedies that could have been avoided by staying sober,” said Rob Sendak, state parks boating law administrator. “Boaters have a choice to choose safety first, and stay sober. At a minimum, they should designate a sober skipper.”

In Washington state, it’s illegal to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol while operating a boat. This includes kayaks, canoes, rowboats and inflatable rafts. BUI is a gross misdemeanor.
